Here are some tips on balancing school with a social life:

Balancing School and Social Life

1. Make time for friends – If you feel like your social life is suffering, then it is time to branch out and make some friends, or make time for the friends you already have. Call up an old friend and make plans for the weekend. If you plan something, you can make the proper adjustments within your week to ensure that you can go out and have a good time without worrying about other things. While it may feel like you have absolutely no time to hang out with friends, you can make the time by choosing time with friends over other unimportant matters. It all comes down to time management.

2. Have people over – If you don’t feel like going out, why not invite some friends over to your place for dinner, games or a movie night with popcorn? Balancing work and family doesn’t mean that you have to go out every night and party. Actually, you can have a lot of fun by renting a movie and having friends over to watch. Or, if it’s football season, why not have a bunch of friends come over and have a football watching party? Have everyone bring an appetizer or entree and hang out while you eat and watch the game.

3. Join a club- The great thing about college is that socializing is quite easy because you have countless opportunities to make new friends. When it comes to creating a social life, college is practically made for it! Clubs and common interest groups are great ways to make friends who you already share something in common with. See what clubs are offered at your school and join one. Whether it’s a business club, or even a sailing club, these groups are fantastic ways to get involved and find people with like interests. You basically have a built-in set of friends who love exactly what you do just waiting for you in these clubs, which makes the entire socialization process that much simpler.

4. Select your living situation wisely – Are you planning on the living in the dorms? Or, are you going to be living in your own housing? If you are going to an online business program and living in an apartment, be sure to look for an apartment complex that has a lot of people your same age living there. If you can find a place with a similar demographic as you, it will be easier to find fun friends to hang out with that live right next to you. Perhaps, if you live in a place with people similar in age, they will come over to hang out and pull you away from the books to go out and have some fun. The importance of work-life balance cannot be underestimated, so be sure to select your living situation wisely to garner the best results.

5. Study in a public place – If you normally do your school work in your house, dorm or private location, branch out and try studying in a local coffee shop or school library. You are bound to run into some people doing the exact same thing as you, and who knows, you might just find a friend! Surrounding yourself with people will help you feel more connected to the world, and is a great reminder that balancing school and a social life is not only important, but necessary. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with a fellow studier at the coffee house and see where the conversation leads you.
