Sponsorship Saves College Courses

Business meets college when City College of San Francisco seeks sponsorship to save endangered community college classes. How does it work? In exchange for funding for a class to continue at a local school, the school offers the company representation. “Arts 101, now brought to you by Coca Cola!”

This is a creative strategy prompted by Chancellor Don Griffon in desperate times. The recession and California’s budget crisis is forcing 800 classes to close the next semester at City College. Thousands of students will be locked out of a college as a result. A strategy is needed to assure education is offered at all financial and educational levels.

The cost is $6,000 per class. The donating party gets to select the class being saved and have their name put on it. This will offer 30 students a chance to attend class three times a week for a 17 week semester.

Electives are not the only classes on the chopping block; core classes like Financial Accounting, Intro to Medical Chemistry and Introductory French are in dire jeopardy of being cut without the financial aid of supporters.

Creative business plans to save colleges will hopefully start sprouting up like this everywhere. If you would like to support City College, here’s how:

  • To revive a canceled class at City College of San Francisco, a $6,000 check may be made out to the Foundation of City College of San Francisco and mailed to City College of San Francisco, c/o Chancellor Don Griffin, 50 Phelan Ave, San Francisco, CA 94112.
  • Specify which course you want to save and ask that your name be attached to the class.
  • Canceled classes are clearly labeled in the online course list.
