Graduates of 2009 Face Bleak Market

FastWeb released an article today about the bleak job market graduates of 2009 face. The story follows Ashley Anderson, a graduate in December 2008, as she sought a job in her field of study with her Bachelor of Arts in Marketing–and ultimately ended up in a customer service position, normally only requiring a GED.

Educators still encourage students to go back to school, but to select their field of study carefully. Students that are in fields that are not thriving in the market are finding themselves expanding outside of their area of study and starting in places they never would have considered while in school, building their career from the ground up

And, if you have the wrong degree, that could be the same ground as high school graduates. Or master’s degree holders that have recently gone unemployed.

Fortunately for business majors, the two areas of study that Fastweb reports are still thriving are accounting and engineering. CBS News also suggests that business majors look for jobs directly within the government. To fight the economic crisis, the government is continuously opening job positions to college graduates.
